Work and Career
Work can be a source of identity, meaning, and fulfillment, as well as a source of frustration, disappointment, and confusion, often both at the same time. In addition to being a licensed therapist for over 2 decades, I also have a professional background that includes corporate, private for-profit and non-profit experience. I have worked with clients in tech, law enforcement, entertainment, service industry, small business and startups, among other fields, and I have a wealth of understanding about the psychology and social dynamics of the workplace. Prior to opening my own private practice office, I worked for a company that provided consultation to employees and managers of large national and international companies to solve workplace problems. In other words, I have expertise in navigating “office politics” and the #1 workplace issue- dealing with difficult people! You know any of those? I bet you do! A large part of what I provide is help with skillful navigation of communication and conflict with coworkers, leadership and management that you answer to, or with those you supervise.
Another important part of what I do is help my clients seek balance between work and personal time, especially with the challenge of 24/7 connectedness through technology. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies in gluing ourselves to work and making ourselves too available. I can help you readjust your behaviors, set boundaries with yourself, and create healthier expectations with others.
A third issue common in the workplace is “imposter syndrome”. That may be too strong of a label for some, but almost all of us have areas of weakness or insecurity in our professional roles. Maybe it’s fear of public speaking, or perhaps difficulty transitioning from a individual contributor to a role in managing people. Believe it or not, even childhood or historical issues can creep into aduIt professional life. “I was a bad student, or I didn’t get a college degree. Do I even belong here among my peers?” I can help you assess and address areas of insecurity and help you make a plan for growth and improvement.
